Meet the Leaders

JARELL SKINNER-ROY
University of Michigan, M.A., Higher Education (candidate)
University of Wisconsin Madison, B.A., French, Legal Studies

While attending UW Madison, Jarell spent six months in Aix-en-Provence, France, where he lived with a host family and attended the local university. He took advantage of opportunities to travel throughout France and Europe, exploring Italy, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Holland, and Spain. After college, Jarell taught English in the West African country of Benin. Working primarily with high school students, he helped them improve their English and become well prepared to study abroad in an English-speaking country. Shortly after returning to the U.S., Jarell had the pleasure to co-lead his first Putney program to Switzerland, Italy, France, and Holland. Following that incredible experience, he worked at an education nonprofit for five years in Minneapolis, Minnesota, while also serving on several nonprofit boards and volunteering as a mentor for high school students. Currently, Jarell is pursuing his master’s in higher education at the University of Michigan. He works in the Office of Student Affairs and conducts research at the National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID). This fall, he will be finishing his master’s program at Michigan and applying for PhD programs across the country. Jarell is proficient in French.

CASCADE LAWRENCE-YEE
Whitman College, B.A., History, B.A., Film and Media Studies

While at Whitman College, Cascade studied history, with an emphasis on the Cold War, and film and media studies with an emphasis on the rise of bingeable television. After a summer working for the National Park Service in Glacier National Park, Cascade first discovered how education can expand beyond the classroom. This revelation led her to seek out similar experiential education opportunities: teaching cooking and gardening classes focused on food justice; connecting students to the outdoors to strengthen leadership skills; and instructing all-women backpacking and climbing trips to encourage female confidence and empowerment. Cascade has spent many nights sleeping in a tent while guiding students in the Colorado wilderness. She has traveled in China, Southeast Asia, Peru, and Ireland. Currently, Cascade lives in Colorado working as an outdoor educator and restaurant server. She is a certified Wilderness First Responder and in her free time Cascade enjoys rock climbing, plunging into alpine lakes, and eating ice cream before breakfast.
